Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a bit better.
My name is Femke, I’m a professional, award-winning pet and automotive photographer, based in Hoofddorp (The Netherlands).
When I was a teenager, I used to sneak out with my parents’ SLR camera to take pictures of butterflies, flowers and our beloved pets. I’d write down the settings for each photo in my notebook and spent all my pocketmoney developing the photos, so I could compare my notes with the actual pictures I’d taken.
On my 12th birthday, my grandfather (a photo enthousiast) gifted me one of his old camera’s, so I could take it with me everywhere I went.
I read every library book I could find about photography. Trying out all kinds of techniques on our poor family dog.
After a few years at college to become a biology teacher, it became clear to me that this wasn’t what I truly wanted to do.
So I followed my heart and took the bold step to start my own business and become a fulltime photographer.
It’s been over 18 years since I started my company and I’ve loved every single moment of it. Capturing meaningful, everlasting moments for my clients. Teaching aspiring photographers. And I’ve even written and published two photography books.

6 Things I love...
• Photography (obviously…)
• Spending time with my dog, birds, bunnies, guinea pigs & chickens
• Having fun on the water on our small boat
• Being creative with wool, watercolor, yarn and other stuff
• Funny, playful webdesign elements
I’ve been fortunate to be a participant in Nikon’s Professional program (NPS).
Nikon has given me the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s most renowned photographers during exclusive lectures and inspiring masterclasses.
The past few years I have attended masterclasses by:
When I first started my company in 2004, I exclusively photographed horses. During this time, I learned a lot about doing business and it didn’t take long before my work was regularly published in all the major magazines.
In 2009 I wanted to experiment with studio strobes, but because horses (obviously) wouldn’t fit in my living room, I tried taking pictures of dogs instead. And I loved it! I still have my studio equipment, but nowadays I choose to mainly shoot outdoors, where the dogs can run and be themselves.
Newborn Pets Photography
However, after a while, I really missed working in the studio. So it was time to try something new! I gathered an embarrassing amount of blankets, wraps, baskets and other super cute items and started taking pictures of newborn animals.
As a photographer, I’ve got acces to some cool equipment. So when I bought my first very own car, I couldn’t help myself but do a complete photoshoot with it. And I’d bring my camera to any automotive events and meetings that my partner and I would visit.
So after a while, it was time to elevate my skills and welcome these “metal horses” into my business.
Fautografie – Automotive Photography was born.
When the pandemic hit, everything shut down and I had to figure out something to make ends meet.
So people would send my their images and I transformed them into beautiful digital photo art in 4 different styles.
You can find them in the Hypo Focus Art Store.
Workshops & Books
I’ve been sharing my knowledge about photography (and how to make it in this industry) to aspiring photographers, by teaching workshops and giving lectures & demos at events. In 2011 I wrote and published my first book “Paardenfotografie” (Horse Photography) and I wrote another book in 2015: “Hondenfotografie” (Dog Photography). Both books are bestsellers.
